Guide / Seasonal opening hours

When is the Doge’s Palace open?

Find Doge’s Palace summer and winter opening times, last admission, closing procedures and advice for planning your arrival.

The short answer

The museum lists 09:00–19:00 from 1 April to 31 October, with last admission at 18:00, and 09:00–18:00 from 1 November to 31 March, with last admission at 17:00. Closing procedures start 30 minutes before closing. Check current museum notices and your ticket’s admission rules before travelling.

Summer and winter opening schedules

The longer summer schedule covers April through October, not just the hottest months. November through March follows the winter schedule. The usual opening time is the same in both seasons; it is the afternoon closing time and final admission that change.

Use the schedule for the actual day you visit. A trip at the end of October can fall on different schedules on consecutive days. Extraordinary openings, events or changes can override the normal pattern, so check the visitor announcements close to departure.

Last admission is not a full visiting slot

Last admission is the latest usual time to enter, not a recommendation for when to begin. Arriving at that limit gives little time for security, orientation and the main rooms. Since closing procedures begin half an hour before the advertised closing time, the full remaining hour is not unrestricted sightseeing time.

For a first visit, aim to start at least two to three hours before closing if your admission conditions permit it. This is a planning recommendation, not a minimum stay imposed by the museum. Add more margin if you want detailed art viewing or need a slower pace.

Your ticket may have its own entry conditions

Opening at 09:00 does not establish that every ticket holder can enter at 09:00. The museum’s current notices state that St Mark’s Square Museums tickets without a specific entry slot are admitted to the palace from noon onwards. Confirm that notice and the instructions on your own booking.

Guided tours and Secret Itineraries have set departures rather than the general opening schedule. Be at the specified meeting point on time; a late arrival can mean missing the tour even though the building remains open. Do not use general last admission as a substitute for a booked tour time.

Choosing a sensible time of day

An early permitted entry often works well if you want to concentrate on the collections before adding another attraction. A later visit can fit around a morning in Venice, but leave enough time and avoid relying on a last-minute arrival. No particular time guarantees empty rooms.

If you also plan to visit St Mark’s Basilica or the museums included in a combined ticket, check their separate schedules. The palace’s closing time does not tell you when the other venues shut or when their own last admission falls.

Holiday closures and special evening hours

The current museum visitor information does not confirm fixed annual closures on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Check the specific year’s holiday notice rather than treating a closure listed elsewhere as established fact.

Extended evening openings apply only to announced dates and days; do not assume the palace closes at 23:00 every evening during summer. Separately arranged after-hours visits require a request at least five working days in advance and confirmation from MUVE.

  • Christmas Day, 25 December: check the holiday notice.
  • New Year’s Day, 1 January: check the holiday notice.

Other important entry rules

Advance booking does not bypass security checks or guarantee immediate entry. Suitcases, trolleys and bulky luggage must be left elsewhere before arrival; smaller bags and umbrellas may be directed to the cloakroom.

The museum lists Doge’s Palace among the venues covered by its Museum Pass and St Mark’s Square Museums ticket. Check validity and admission conditions; a pass is not automatically a reservation for Secret Itineraries or another special tour.

Do not assume a national first-Sunday free-entry scheme applies here. MUVE publishes its own concessions and Musei in Festa dates; the current Musei in Festa offer is for eligible local residents, not every visitor.

Turn the timetable into a realistic arrival plan

Start with the admission time your ticket actually permits, then work backwards from the visit you want. For a two-hour main-palace visit, a summer entry around 16:00 leaves more margin than the final 18:00 admission; in winter, an entry around 15:00 is more workable than 17:00. These are planning examples, not guaranteed two-hour slots.

Include travel, security and orientation outside your gallery allowance. Avoid placing a non-refundable basilica booking immediately after your expected exit. On a day with uncertain holiday arrangements, establish the actual opening notice before deciding which attraction comes first.

  • Morning: check that your ticket permits entry at opening; untimed St Mark’s Square Museums tickets currently enter from noon.
  • Afternoon: allow for closing procedures, which normally start at 18:30 in summer or 17:30 in winter.
  • Peak periods and holidays: reserve a suitable product early, but do not assume a weekday or first slot guarantees empty rooms.
  • Evening: use only the dates, last entry and conditions in a current special-opening announcement.

Questions answered

Frequently asked

Does the Doge’s Palace close earlier in winter?

Yes. The listed winter closing time is 18:00, with last admission at 17:00. The summer schedule ends at 19:00, with last admission at 18:00.

Can I stay until the exact closing time?

The museum states that closing procedures begin 30 minutes before closing. Plan to finish your main viewing earlier rather than expecting uninterrupted access to every room until the final minute.

Are evening visits always available?

No. Special or after-hours openings have their own arrangements. Check current museum notices and do not assume a general ticket provides evening admission.
